California K-9 Recovering After Losing Teeth Taking Down Carjacking Suspect
A badly injured Santa Ana police K-9 dog left the hospital Tuesday after undergoing surgery hours after helping officers dramatically chase down a fleeing carjacker — a pursuit and ensuing struggle that knocked out several of the animal’s upper and lower teeth.
The 8-year-old Dutch shepherd, named Puskas after Hungarian footballer Ferenc Puskás, assisted officers Monday evening in a pursuit involving a carjacking in which the suspect tried to elude pursuing officers as he drove from Santa Ana to Irvine. When the suspect finally emerged from the vehicle, Puskas swiftly chased him down as he tried to flee on foot.
Cpl. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department said the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Antonio Padilla Jr. of Riverside County, had a 30- to 40-foot lead on Puskas and was running toward an open business. Given the suspect’s dangerous behavior, officers had deployed the K-9. Puskas quickly closed the gap, but police think the dog’s face collided with the concrete while taking the suspect down, knocking out six of his smaller teeth but leaving his canines, the most important teeth for his job, Bertagna said.
Doctors had to fully extract each of Puskas’ broken teeth and stitch a large cut on his face, Bertagna told the OC Register. He added that the teeth Puskas lost won’t stop him from doing his job, and that he should be able to work again after a few weeks off.

Video: Cleveland Officer Under Investigation for Not Aiding Other Cops in Struggle
VIDEO: Cleveland Officer Under Investigation for Not Aiding Other Cops in Struggle
A Cleveland TV station has obtained video showing a city police officer saying he won’t help other officers deal with a dangerous man because he doesn’t want to end up under investigation.
The video comes from a call in November for a man having a mental health crisis. A group of officers tried to talk him into coming out of a house. A police report shows he made threats to officers and made other bizarre statements. That led to a struggle with police on the porch, Fox 8 reports.
During the struggle, one officer calmly walked down the street to get an ambulance crew. He can be heard telling paramedics, "I don't want to go hands on. I don't want none of that cause I don't want to…be under investigation."
The officer is now facing internal discipline for the incident. A disciplinary hearing has been held. But there’s been no decision yet.

Charlotte Refuses to Settle with Family Over Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting that Sparked Riots
The city of Charlotte will not settle with the family of Keith Lamont Scott, who was fatally shot by a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer in 2016, according to the family’s lawyer.
“The city has refused to make any settlement offer whatsoever and has rejected all efforts to amicably settle the matter out of court,” said Justin Bamberg, who represents the Scott family.
Bamberg told the Charlotte Observer the family will file a lawsuit in response.
In April 2017, CMPD announced that the officer who fired the shot “acted lawfully and in accordance with department policy,” and would not face internal discipline related to the shooting.
The shooting sparked anti-police riots in the city for about four consecutive nights.

National Law Enforcement Museum Hosts Reading of Book 'Friendly Officers'
At the Shaw (Watha T. Daniel) Neighborhood Library in Washington DC, 12-year-old author Miguel Coppedge recently introduced a group of young people to some of his friends: a dance instructor, a football coach, and a friend who helps the homeless. The common thread? They are also police officers with the Metropolitan (DC) Police Department. These officers who have been influential in Miguel’s young life were on hand at the Feb. 24 program to show their support as he read from his third published book, Friendly Officers.
" />
Miguel told those gathered for the program, “I wanted children, especially those with my skin color, to know that police officers are here to help you.” The officers Miguel counts as his friends were featured in the book. Commander Chanel Dickerson, head of Youth and Family Services Division of the Metropolitan (DC) Police Department, was also at the recent book reading. Dickerson, who introduced Miguel, reaffirmed the importance of police and community engagement, a central theme in Miguel’s book.
After the reading, Miguel and the police officers answered questions from the group about everything from police K-9 units to SWAT teams and the color of police officers’ uniforms.
" />
Miguel Coppedge is also the author of two other books about first responders, The Adventures of FireMan and The Adventures of FireMan and the Case of the Stinger.” His books are available on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble stores.
