2 Men Held Without Bail in Shooting of Boston Officer
Boston police gang unit Officer Patrick Curtin had no idea he was being shot until the leg he wedged into the front door of Requon Remy Martin’s South End apartment building began to burn, according to a police report.
Boston Municipal Court Judge James M. Stanton yesterday ordered Martin, 21, and his co-defendant Antoine Mack, 35, of Pawtucket, R.I., held without bail at the request of assistant Suffolk District Attorney Montez Haywood after they pleaded not guilty to armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and multiple firearm charges.
The suspects face a dangerousness hearing tomorrow and Martin indicated he may call witnesses and testify in his own defense, the Boston Herald reports.
Curtin and two other officers followed the duo inside the West Springfield Street building, suspecting Martin and Mack were concealing handguns by the way they allegedly grabbed at their waists when they hurried away from members of the Youth Violence Strike Force.

HAIX Releases New Tactical High Side Zip Boot
HAIX North America www.haixusa.com has announced the release of its newest boot, the Black Eagle Tactical 2.0 GTX High Side Zip.
The company says the Black Eagle Tactical 2.0 GTX High Side Zip is the perfect choice for anyone who is looking for something lightweight and breathable with the convenience of a side zipper for "quick in and out of the boot." Built with trail-running technology, these boots are suited to running down a suspect or taking a leisurely jog in the park, HAIX says. They are extremely lightweight, durable, and offer all-day comfort, even after long hours on your feet.
This version of the Black Eagle Tactical boots has a few differences when compared to the other models. The upper material is made of the high-quality, waterproof bull hide leather and a soft microfiber design. Built with Sun Reflect technology, the boots are highly breathable and durably waterproof with a Gore-Tex inner liner that keeps the wearer's feet drier and more comfortable whether on or off duty. The metal-free design, including the waterproof zipper, makes these boots airport friendly, so they can be worn when working with security surveillance equipment or metal detectors. And, for the first time, this Black Eagle version is offered in Medium and Wide widths for those who need a little extra room.
The Black Eagle Tactical 2.0 GTX High Side Zip also features non-slip soles so professionals can keep their footing. The soles are shock absorbing and non-marking along with being fuel-, oil- and heat resistant. PU is injected into the sole for optimal comfort and heat insulation. There is also extra padding in the ankle area for additional support and stability.
Like the other boots in the Black Eagle line, the Black Eagle Tactical 2.0 GTX High Side Zip comes with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty with the option to add an additional year.
For more information on the release of the Black Eagle Tactical 2.0 GTX High Side Zip boot, visit www.haixusa.com or call (866)-344-4249.

Muslim Officer Suing California Department Alleging Racism and Harassment
An officer with the San Jose (CA) Police Department is suing the agency for alleged harassment, discrimination and retaliation based upon his race, national origin and religion, according to the Mercury News.
Nabil Haidar—who is of Lebanese descent—claims in the suit that he was subjected to discriminatory behavior that increased in severity over the years, but he didn't complain out of fear of retaliation.
He claims that since joining the department in 1997, he has been given nicknames such as "Taliban," "Beirut Bomber," and "ISIS."
Haidar moved to the United States in 1988 to escape the civil war that claimed the lives of three family members.

Florida Passes Law to Help Police Investigate Online Child Predation
A new Florida law goes into effect next week that will stop internet providers from tipping off suspected predators that the police investigating child pornography and online predation may be interested in their activities on the web.
Internet providers and cloud storage services find porn or child abuse and then report it to police.
"And then, before we could start delving into it, they would notify the perps because they were worried about being sued," Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey told WCTV News.
Under the new law, internet providers can't tell a perp they're being investigated for 90 days. If police need more time, they can have a delay extended in 90-day increments.

VirTra Launches Virtual Interactive Coursework Training Academy
VirTra, Inc., a global provider of training simulators for the law enforcement, military, educational and commercial markets, has officially launched V-VICTA (VirTra-Virtual Interactive Coursework Training Academy) an all-in-one solution designed to provide and support law enforcement training programs in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
V-VICTA enables law enforcement agencies, through the use of VirTra's simulators to effectively teach, train, test and sustain departmental training requirements. The newly developed and nationally accredited coursework, when combined with the new VirTra Virtual Instructor (V-VI) and training scenarios, empowers trainers with immediate training program improvements.
The first volume of V-VICTA curriculum has met the standards set forth by the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (IADLEST) National Certification Program for POST Certification across 35 states and is recognized in all 50 states, the company says. These five products include: “Contact and Cover Concepts,” “Human Factors in Force Encounters,” “Tourniquet Application Under Threat,” “TASER Targeting,” and “Injured Officer Handgun Manipulation.” These products have been thoroughly reviewed by IADLEST’s assessment team and have passed the rigorous independent review process, the company adds.
“VirTra’s multi-year development efforts and industry-leading collaborations have resulted in a more robust training methodology where instructors are provided resources to alleviate any gaps, increase knowledge transfer and enhance the sustainability of the skill sets taught,” said company general manager Jason Mulcahy. “VirTra has been on the cutting edge of advancements in law enforcement training as well as education for many years, and we believe V-VICTA is the next logical step in that progression. We look forward to working with our customers and partners in the coming months to maximize their success in working with this next-gen training resource.”
V-VICTA provides law enforcement trainers with the complementary accredited training components, including a master manual, student handouts, pre-testing material, and final exams. V-VICTA offers a unique and innovative alternative for a higher level of in-depth review at each training point. Additionally, throughout the simulation training, a Virtual Instructor is available with the relevant curriculum included within VirTra systems.
VirTra will debut V-VICTA at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) conference in Orlando, Florida on October 7-9, 2018. The company's nationally recognized partners will participate in a group presentation during the product unveiling. Some of the company's planned speakers include Dr. Bill Lewinski (Force Science Institute), Jim Crosby (National Sheriffs Association), Ken Wallentine (Utah Attorney General Office), Chief Tom Poellot (Vistelar) as well as other representations from Trijicon, and Southwest Autism Research & Resource Center (SARRC).
Together with its partners, VirTra is working to integrate specific scientific research and adult learning behaviors into its educational materials. This will maximize the impact of simulation training time and increase overall law enforcement capabilities. By taking the science behind training psychomotor skills and integrating it into a comprehensive curriculum, V-VICTA courses provide a complete solution combining the classroom, the simulator, and testing to ensure beneficial long-term results. VirTra says it strives to ensure that peace officers have the best opportunity to serve their communities.
To receive additional information or schedule a one-on-one meeting at IACP, please email training@virtra.com.

Glock Announces New 5th Generation Pistol
Glock has announced a new addition to the 9X19 family of pistols featuring the latest in design and engineering seen in the 5th Generation of the company's pistols. The Glock 45 combines the fast handling of the Glock 19 compact-sized slide with the full-size frame as a compact crossover, the company says.
Taking on the crossover design of the Glock 19X and the Glock hard-surface finish in non-reflective black, the G45 makes the ultimate service pistol, the company says.
“After the release of the G19X, we saw a strong interest from the law enforcement community for the design in a black model,” said Glock Inc. VP Josh Dorsey. “The G45 is the result of a design that meets the demanding level of reliability with distinctive Gen5 design enhancements to improve durability, accuracy and performance to those who go into harm’s way where fractions of a second matter.”
The G45 features the Glock Safe Action System and incorporates elements of the 5th Generation of Glock pistols, including a smoother trigger pull, an enhanced frame texture for sure handling, a reversible magazine catch, ambidextrous slide stop lever, the Modular Backstrap System (MBS) for individual adjustability, and the match-grade Glock Marksman Barrel (GMB). The G45 also features front serrations, which are precision-milled forward of the ejection port on both sides.
The Glock Compact Crossover G45 pistol will make its debut at the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Conference early next month and will be available on dealer shelves beginning October 5.

Glock Releases 2 New Optics Ready Pistols
Glock has expanded its 5th Generation of pistols with the addition of two modular optic ready platforms. The Glock 17 Gen5 MOS and 19 Gen5 MOS come optic ready right from the factory and enable users to mount their preferred reflex sights to their pistols.
“The MOS platform offers a convenient way for users to mount reflex sights without costly alterations to an original Glock slide,” said Glock Inc. VP Josh Dorsey. “The resulting combination of optical sighting and the unparalleled accuracy and reliability of the new generation of Glock pistols set a new standard for this class of pistol.”
These Gen5 models are precision-machined to provide a mounting system for all popular optic sights, Glock says. With multiple adapter plates, you can quickly and easily mount electronic sights to the rear of the slide. The Gen5 MOS family of pistols also feature front serrations for easier and quicker manipulations. This includes the addition of front serrations on the G34 Gen5 MOS, which was first introduced to the market in January.

Texas Department Welcomes 54-Year-Old Rookie Officer
At 54, Officer Wendy Caldwell has joined the Houston Police Department as the agency's oldest rookie.
ABC News reports that Caldwell had been with the department in the early 1990s, but left the job to take care of her two small children as a full-time stay-at-home mom.
"It was an extremely hard decision for me. I wanted to do both, but I realized that my children were more important," Caldwell told the news station. "That time that I got to spend with them was absolutely golden for me. I'll never be able to replace that, so that's something, those memories that I have with my kids, I'll have forever."
But in 2015 to 2016 her marriage of almost 20 years began to fail, and she needed to find a way to support herself financially. So she returned to the job she loved as a young woman.
Caldwell graduated number 17 out of 67 in her class and joined the Central Patrol Division for her permanent assignment.
