Who’s YOUR favorite HAIX Hero?
Nominees for the July HAIX Hero of the Month have been selected and introduced in the last three weeks – and boy have their communities been rooting for them. Now, we want to hear more from the overall law enforcement community, and from their friends, colleagues, and family members.
Take a moment to review each of our hero nominees below and let us know who your favorite is on our recent Facebook post here. Or, if you don’t have a Facebook page, let us know who your favorite is in our comment section below!
Officer Amanda Clay
Our first nominee is from the Alpharetta (GA) Department of Public Safety. She is a 10-year veteran of law enforcement but she started her career much earlier as an Explorer and is now one of the advisors for the Alpharetta DPS Explorer program.
This hero is beloved by community members of all ages and was nominated specifically for her long-standing commitment to the young members of her community through her 16-year involvement with the Explorer program and her eight years of working with the iCan Bike program. The iCan Bike program provides a platform for special needs children to participate with their typically developing peers for the first time in their lives by learning to ride bicycles. She has even purchased bikes for those that cannot afford them with her own money. Clay has not only brightened the lives of these children and their families but improved them for many years to come.
Selfless, committed and caring – this certainly spells hero to us.
Officer Travis Goodson
The second nominee is from Albany, GA, and is known in all parts of the country because of his #hugacop campaign has gone viral!
In an effort to spread some much-needed love and positivity, he has led quite a few initiatives to bring joy and long-lasting positive effects to his community. He has brought together volunteers to revitalize a housing area and to conduct other community day cleanups and has organized a child seat safety education event for low-income mothers.
Hoping for a ripple effect throughout the country, this innovative, change-making patrol officer is helping improve the narrative between community members and law enforcement wherever he goes.
Living up to his last name with his outstanding commitment to law enforcement and members of his community alike, Travis Goodson also gets the #hero stamp from us.
Chief Jerry Bellak
Our third and final nominee serves as the Chief of the Indian Lake (PA) Police Department. Notably, Chief Jerry Bellak was nominated by the Somerset County community's mayor, Michael Miscoe. Mayor Miscoe credits Bellak with transforming the Indian Lake Police Department since becoming chief two years ago. He has done everything from solving every single break-in since becoming chief, to pulling a school bus out of a ditch during a winter storm and finding a lost dog for a grateful resident.
He has taken his role as an exemplary law enforcement officer to a new level by instituting the Stop and Talk program and a crime watch program to engage with residents.
“Valuable, competent, and effective”… anyone else thinking “hero”?
Though these nominees are all very different, they have at least one important thing in common – they have demonstrated they are willing to go above and beyond the already heroic duties of law enforcement. Join us and give these heroes some love in the comment section.
Check back in later this week to see who the final winner is!

VIDEO: Judges Rule Trump Supporters Attacked in San Jose Can Sue Police
A group of Trump supporters who were caught in an angry crowd during a 2016 protest in San Jose, CA, can sue the police department, a panel of judges ruled Friday.
A three-judge panel with Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with Trump supporter Juan Hernandez, the lead plaintiff in a federal lawsuit against the San Jose Police Department.
“San Jose PD led us right into the protesters,” said Hernandez. “Someone needs to be held accountable for what happened. So, it’s awesome — a huge step — to know that they will be held accountable for the lack of planning and the stand-down order that they received.”
The lawsuit claims San Jose police funneled Trump supporters leaving a June 2016 rally right into the middle of a crowd of counter-protesters, who quickly surrounded and attacked them.
San Jose is expected to appeal the ruling.

Man Accused of Striking Border Patrol Agent with Rock, Stealing ATV
A man is accused of hitting a Border Patrol agent with a rock and stealing his ATV before he was shot by agents and arrested near the Tijuana River estuary early Sunday, according to KSWB-TV.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He was struck at least once by agents who opened fire on the man as he fled on the stolen ATV.
No agents were seriously injured during the incident, according to San Diego police Homicide Captain Thomas Underwood.
San Diego police homicide detectives were in charge of investigating the shooting, because it took place within San Diego city limits.

FBI Celebrates Birthday, Cites "Rigorous Adherence to the Constitution"
In 1908, the first Model T was produced, the first ball was dropped in Times Square to celebrate the New Year, the #1 song was Take Me Out to the Ball Game, and the FBI was born, according to a press release issued by the agency last week.
"On July 26, 2018, the FBI celebrates 110 years of public service," the release said. "In honor of this milestone, we reflect on our history and look forward to the future of the organization. At FBI Headquarters and across all field offices, we are highlighting the FBI’s history and recognizing the people and work of the FBI."
The agency said further that "Our best traditions have not changed, however — our rigorous adherence to the Constitution and the rule of law, and the guiding principles in our motto of Fidelity, Bravery, Integrity."
The FBI was established on July 26, 1908, by Attorney General Charles J. Bonaparte with just 34 special agents and was officially named the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935. Since then, the FBI has grown to nearly 37,000 employees, including more than 13,500 special agents and more than 22,800 professional staff employees in 56 field offices, more than 400 resident agencies, and 90 legal attaché offices and sub-offices worldwide.

No Charges Against Minnesota Officers in Fatal OIS of Thurman Blevins
No charges will be filed against the officers involved in the fatal officer-involved shooting of 31-year-old Thurman Blevins in an alley in Minneapolis on June 23, according to a statement from the county attorney.
Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman said in a statement that Blevins allegedly ignored multiple commands to show his hands, took a gun out of his pocket, and turned toward the officers.
"Witness testimony, body camera footage, and forensic testing proved that Blevins had a gun in his hand" when he fled officers and led them on a lengthy foot pursuit, according to ABC News.
Two officers had responded to a 911 call reporting a male firing a handgun in a residential neighborhood. The officers fired a total of 14 shots, with four hitting Blevins, according to authorities.

Police: Participants in Viral "Kiki Challenge" Will Be Charged
Police around the world are warning people not to get out of their cars—at least not when those vehicles are still in gear and moving.
The latest viral "challenge" on the Internet, known as the "Kiki challenge" and also known as the "In My Feelings challenge," involves drivers jumping out of their moving vehicles and dancing alongside of the still rolling cars.
According to the Guardian, police in India, Spain, the United States, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates, have warned people that the dance challenge is dangerous and people caught trying it could face criminal charges.
The craze reportedly began when Internet comedian "Shiggy" posted a video to Instagram of himself dancing to a song.
Not just a risk for you but your act can put life of others at risk too. Desist from public nuisance or face the music ! #DanceYourWayToSafety #InMySafetyFeelingsChallenge pic.twitter.com/gY2txdcxWZ

North Carolina Town's Entire Department on Paid Administrative Leave
The entire force on the Southport (NC) Police Department have been suspended and placed on paid administrative leave after the chief and a lieutenant were arrested "and charged with double-dipping at a second job while on the clock at the police department," according to WECT-TV.
Chief Gary Smith and Lieutenant Michael Christian Simmons were "charged with conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses, willful failure to discharge duties, and obstruction of justice," according to reports.
State investigators said Smith and Simmons were driving overnight shifts for an unnamed local trucking company during the same hours they had claimed on their daily activity reports for the Southport Police Department.
District Attorney Jon David said that although all police have been temporarily suspended, the public should not assume that all are guilty of misconduct, and that the investigation continues. David added that some of the officers who are now suspended were, in fact, the whistleblowers who alerted him to the problem.
"A lot of these officers have done absolutely nothing wrong. Some of them are the ones that first came forward," David said. "This stain should not be extended to the officers who take seriously their duty to serve and protect."

3 Arrested in Connection to Shooting of 2 Massachusetts Police Officers
Police have arrested three individuals in connection to a shootout in Falmouth, MA, that left Officers Donald DeMiranda and Ryan Moore injured on Friday afternoon.
The gun battle broke out after Officers DeMiranda and Moore responded to a disturbance call. Investigators said that 21-year-old Malik Antonio Koval "produced a gun and began shooting at the officers." Officers returned fire, striking Koval several times.

In addition to arresting Koval—the main suspect who allegedly shot the officers—police also arrested 38-year-old Kimberly Koval and 18-year-old Marcus Maseda, who allegedly interfered with the officers.
Kimberly Koval and Maseda were charged with the obstruction of justice, interfering with the duties of a police officer, and assault and battery on a police officer.
