Phoenix K-9 Killed Finding Suspect in Attic
Phoenix Police K-9 Bane was killed after it was deployed to locate a suspect who had hidden in an attic after leading police on a pursuit and bailing from the vehicle a few hours earlier, said Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams.
The incident reportedly began with a vehicle theft and pursuit Tuesday afternoon and ended with one woman arrested and a man in the hospital after what police called an officer-involved shooting.
Williams did not immediately confirm the man was shot by an officer but said he was injured and taken to a hospital. She said, however, the incident was the 17th police shooting involving Phoenix officers. Police did not specify how the dog was killed, reports the Arizona Republic.
The suspect was found on top of Bane before he was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, Williams said.
K-9 Bane was a three-year-old Belgian Malinois who had served the Phoenix Police Department for a little over one year, according to Sgt. Jonathan Howard, Phoenix PD public information officer.

Texas Deputies Wounded in Gunfight
An Atascocita, TX, man engaged in a shootout with four constable deputies Tuesday morning, wounding two, Harris County Deputy Thomas Gilliland said.
The resident was also wounded in the gunfight, and sustained 22 entry and exit gunshot wounds, according to the Harris County Constable Precinct 4.
Constable Mark Herman identified one of the deputies as Christopher Gaines and said he was flown to the hospital. The deputy, who has been with the department for two years and is assigned to its East District Patrol division in Humble, is currently in stable condition, Herman said.
Another deputy who was wounded, Deputy Faniyi, was struck in the head by a shotgun pellet and received nine stitches, according to the constable's office.
The resident was shot multiple times by the four deputies, Gilliland said. He is in serious condition and is expected to survive. He will face four counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, Gilliland said.
The shooting happened around 2:50 a.m. Deputies arrived in response to a phone call from man in his 20s who sounded suicidal, Gilliland said. The deputies tried to make contact with the man, and after the second attempt, he came out with a shotgun, the Houston Chronicle reports.

DC Officer Training Now Includes African-American History
A one of its kind program in Washington aims to educate every member of D.C.’s police force on the African-American history of the city they patrol.
The department is partnering with the University of the District of Columbia Community College as well as the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture to improve the city’s community policing.
Each sworn and civilian member will participate in the 10-hour program led by the college’s history professors, which begins with a tour and discussion at the museum and followed by guided neighborhood walks, WTOP reports.
“We take officers on to a U Street tour where we spend four or five hours in the Shaw community examining police brutality, examining history, examining the black Mecca of America, Washington, D.C. and the black Broadway along U Street; and the officers get a real good sense of D.C. history, D.C. policing and how we here are changing policing in America,” professor Bernard Demczuk said.

Video: Family Sues Woman who Shot, Killed Man Attacking Indiana Officer
VIDEO: Family Sues Woman who Shot, Killed Man Attacking Indiana Officer
In February 2017, an off-duty Indiana conservation officer responded to a 911 call in Rising Sun, IN, about a suspicious vehicle.
At some point, the officer got into a scuffle with Justin Holland, 25, who was later shot and killed by Kystie Jaehnen, according to police.
Holland's family is now suing Jaehnen, the officer, and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. The suit claims Jaehnen used excessive and unjustified deadly force in the shooting, Fox 19 reports.
Witnesses told investigators Holland was overpowering the officer, and that a witness shot Holland in the shoulder after fearing for the officer's life. First aid was administered but Holland was later pronounced dead at Dearborn County Hospital.
State police said a search of Holland's vehicle revealed methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Toxicology results from his autopsy found meth, benzodiazepines, marijuana, methadone, and dextromethorphan in his system, according to the prosecutor.
Friends have quickly come to Jaehnen's side by setting up a GoFundMe account, that, after just a few days has more than $20,000 in it.

Supreme Court Restricts Deportation of Violent Felons
A provision in U.S. law requiring the deportation of immigrants convicted of crimes of violence is unconstitutionally vague, the Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday in a decision that could hinder the removal of immigrants with criminal records.
The court, in a 5-4 ruling in which President Donald Trump’s conservative appointee Neil Gorsuch joined four liberal justices, invalidated the provision in the Immigration and Nationality Act and sided with convicted California burglar James Garcia Dimaya, a legal immigrant from the Philippines.
Federal authorities ordered Dimaya deported after he was convicted in two California home burglaries, in 2007 and 2009, though neither crime involved violence, Reuters reports.
Justice Elena Kagan said the disputed provision’s ambiguity had created confusion in lower courts. “Does car burglary qualify as a violent felony?” Kagan wrote. “Some courts say yes, another says no.” Kagan mentioned other examples including rape, evading arrest and trespassing in which courts have also been divided.
“No one should be surprised that the Constitution looks unkindly on any law so vague that reasonable people cannot understand its terms and judges do not know where to begin in applying it,” Gorsuch wrote.
The Supreme Court heard arguments in the case on Oct. 2, the first day of its current nine-month term. The court initially heard arguments in January 2017 when it was one justice short, but decided last June after Gorsuch brought the court to full strength to have the case re-argued, putting the new justice in a position to cast the deciding vote.
