French Police Officer Shot After Swapping Himself for Hostage, Officials Say

A French policeman who was shot by a gunman Friday after swapping himself for a hostage in an apparent terror attack at a supermarket in the southwest town of Trebes is being praised as a hero. The policeman was among a group of officers who rushed to the scene after the attacker, who claimed allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group, stormed the store and fired on shoppers and staff before taking them hostage.

The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Redouane Lakdim, reportedly shot dead two people at the supermarket after earlier opening fire on passengers in a car, killing one of them, and injuring a police officer in nearby Carcassonne, reports CBS News.

"Everything leads us to believe it is a terror attack," said French President Emmanuel Macron.

The officer, who was reportedly seriously injured, was later identified as Col. Arnaud Beltrame.

An officer from the police SWAT team was also hurt in the operation. The gunman was killed.

Las Vegas Gunman Showed "True Mark of a Sociopath," Says Retired Officer

Newly released surveillance video shows Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock in the days before he opened fire from his Mandalay Bay hotel room, killing 58 people. (screenshot: CBS This Morning)

Newly released surveillance video shows Las Vegas gunman Stephen Paddock in the days before he opened fire from his Mandalay Bay hotel room, killing 58 people. MGM Resorts said it released the video because it wanted to provide greater context around Paddock's actions leading up to the shooting. The hotel said the images show that Paddock gave no outward indications of the massacre he was planning to carry out, reports CBS News.

In the series of security videos, Paddock appears like any other guest. He checks into his suite on the 32nd floor, plays video poker and buys snacks at the gift shop – all the while interacting with hotel staff.

"He's so calm," CBS News correspondent Carter Evans noted, watching the videos.

"And that is the true mark of a sociopath," said Randy Sutton, a retired lieutenant with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

"He's going about his business, he's tipping the guys," Sutton said. "A guy who can order lunch knowing that he's going to kill people… that's not normal."

VIDEO: Cop Killer Suspect Facing Death Penalty in 2 Ohio Officers' Deaths

The man accused of fatally shooting two Westerville, OH, police officers responding to a hang-up 911 call was indicted Friday on charges that carry the possibility of a death sentence, reports 10tv.com.

Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O'Brien says a grand jury has returned a six-count death penalty indictment against Quentin Lamar Smith for the aggravated murders of Officers Anthony Morelli and Eric Joering.

The case is eligible for the death penalty because police officers were killed in the line of duty and also because more than one person was killed.

Investigators said Smith fired on the officers as they entered his townhouse on Feb. 10. Smith was shot and wounded and hospitalized for several days.

The Fraternal Order of Police said a death sentence is the only acceptable outcome.

Arraignment for the death penalty case is set for Wednesday, March 28.

Sacramento Officers Receive Death Threats After Being Named by Attorney as Involved in Clark Shooting

The names of the two officers who shot Stephon Clark in Sacramento on Sunday were released Friday by a prominent civil rights attorney in Oakland. They are receiving death threats, according to ABC News.

A representative from the law office of John Burris in Oakland named the two officers.

The Sacramento Police Department declined to confirm the names. Department spokeswoman Officer Linda Matthew said the officers involved in the shooting have received "numerous" threats.

"Based on the threats we do know about, it would be careless of us at this point to release the names," Matthew told the Sacramento Bee.
