Traka will be at The Emergency Services Show, unveiling its latest intelligent systems for securely storing and controlling access to vulnerable keys and vital equipment, including the latest body-worn camera technology.

On stand L47, Traka, known for its intelligent key cabinets and locker solutions, will show how its bespoke systems are being utilized by the Emergency Services to better manage equipment, valuables, and sensitive material.

At the show, Traka will be demonstrating how its innovative Modular Locker system has evolved to reflect the increasing use and need for secure, audit control storage by the Emergency Services for body-worn camera scanners.

California Businessman to Host Private "Law Enforcement Appreciation Festival"

<p>A businessman in Southern California is stepping up to show his support for law enforcement by hosting a " />

A businessman in Southern California is stepping up to show his support for law enforcement by hosting a "Law Enforcement Appreciation Festival" at a private location in Huntington Beach on Sunday, August 26th.

More than 5,000 Southern California law enforcement officers and their families — with representation from the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles and Orange County Sheriff’s Departments, the California Highway Patrol, as well as the Long Beach, Huntington Beach, Westminster, and other police departments — are expected to attend.

The event is principally sponsored by 80-year-old Allen Alevy — the founder of Westland Industries and the Westland Real Estate Group in Southern California.

"The men and women of the law enforcement community — and their precious families — sacrifice so much to keep our cities and towns safe. We owe them a tremendous debt of gratitude," Alevy told POLICE Magazine.

"We are grateful to the Alevy Family for their generous support of law enforcement families," Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell told POLICE Magazine. "This event brings families together for a day of fun and camaraderie."

"That's what the Law Enforcement Appreciation Festival is all about. We will be showing respect and expressing our thanks, all while offering these dedicated families a day of fun together. They definitely deserve it," Alevy added.

In addition to the festival, Alevy has been providing financial support to Southern California law enforcement families by supporting widows and children of fallen law enforcement officers with efforts ranging from sending presents at the holidays to iPads for the children, plus swim parties at his private residence, complete with masseuses and pampering for the mothers, "and pizza for all."

"There is a thin blue line between order and chaos, between life and death, between civilization and anarchy. We believe those who serve, who hold that line, deserve our undying respect and appreciation," said the event website.

Lawmaker Asks DOJ to Probe Police Use of Facial Recognition Technology

Embed from Getty Images

Representative Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.) has asked the Department of Justice to examine how law enforcement agencies use facial recognition software, saying that he fears the technology has the potential to “exacerbate and entrench” racial divisions in policing practice due to differing performance in matching people from different demographics, according to BiometricUpdate.

In a letter to acting Assistant Attorney General John Gore — who leads DOJ's Civil Rights Division — Cleaver said that "if not appropriately implemented, use of the technology may threaten the life and liberty of Americans with crushing force."

Cleaver wrote further that there is "a growing body of evidence" that suggests facial recognition may "have the potential to exacerbate and entrench existing policing disparities along racial lines."

Cleaver's letter also took aim at Amazon — makers of facial recognition software, known as Rekognition, which is in use by some police agencies — saying that it was recently reported that the technology is "less accurate for African American subjects" and that Cleaver is "extremely concerned that facial recognition technologies will disproportionately burden African American communities."

According to The Hill, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Cedric Richmond (D-La.) sent a letter to Amazon in May, voicing concern about potential misuse of the technology.

Arizona Police Use Mannequins with Radar Guns to Discourage Speeding

The Tucson Police Department has pulled a page from an age-old playbook for traffic enforcement.

The Operations Division recently outfitted mannequins armed with radar guns and positioned them next to empty police vehicles in order to encourage drivers to slow down at intersections known to be the locations of frequent collisions due to speeding.

This is the first time TPD has utilized this method by using mannequins, according to ABC-15.

Sergeant Corie Nolan told Fox10 News, "It's fun. It's challenging to try and get people to change their driving behaviors. Because that's ultimately why we're out here."
