VIDEO: Seattle Chief Says It's Miracle Officer Wasn't Killed in Downtown Shootout Last Week
Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole was visiting an officer seriously wounded in Thursday's downtown robbery shootout Friday and spoke with KOMO News about the incident.
Three officers shot following a robbery, and chase near Pioneer Square are recovering from their injuries.
The officers exchanged gunfire with 19-year-old Damarius Butts who had just robbed a 7-Eleven store of beer and doughnuts. Butts was shot dead, and two others - Butt's 17-year-old sister, and a 19-year-old male friend - who are suspected as accomplices in the robbery, were arrested.
Officer Hudson Kang suffered wounds to his face and chest and remains at Harborview Medical Center in serious but stable condition, Harborview said Friday night.
"The fact that he's alive right now is really a miracle," said Seattle Police Chief Kathleen O'Toole who visited with the injured officers. O'Toole said Kang is in good spirits, but has a long recovery.
Another officer, Elizabeth Kennedy was shot in the chest, but was likely saved by her body armor, police say. She was released from Harborview Thursday evening.
The third officer injured in the shooting, Chris Myers was grazed in the hand by a bullet.
"Thankfully, we didn’t lose any of our officers [in this incident] but it was a very close call," said O'Toole.
