Florida Officer Was Killed With His Duty Weapon, Report Says

Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller died from a gunshot fired from his own weapon while he was on the ground, according to the Fort Myers Police Department arrest report for shooting suspect Wisner Desmaret.

Desmaret allegedly stole a cellphone and ran from police, according to official documents released Monday, reports the Fort Myers News-Press. He apparently looked like he was going to comply before lunging at Officer Jobbers-Miller, knocking the 29-year-old officer to the ground. The officer landed face-up.

Desmaret reportedly hovered over the officer, reached for the officer's gun, and pulled it from his duty belt and fired.

Desmaret yelled out multiple expletives after allegedly shooting Jobbers-Miller, the report states, and then began to taunt officers.

Officer Jobbers-Miller died Saturday.

Massachusetts Town's Entire Department Quits, Citing Safety Issues

All four police officers employed by the Blandford (MA) Police Department have tendered their resignations, according to CBS News.

Citing poor equipment and unsafe working conditions, Interim Police Chief Roberta Sarnacki and three other officers submitted their resignations in a letter to town officials on Monday.

"The officers said the town’s police cruisers are in such bad shape they often have to answer calls in their personal vehicles," said the CBS News report.

Officers allege that their radios don’t work "in some parts of the town" and that their ballistic armor is beyond the expiration dates for replacement.

Calls for service will now be answered by Massachusetts State Police.

New Illinois Lottery Game to Fund Police Memorials, Support Families

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner signed a bill on Monday to create a new Illinois Lottery scratch-off game with the proceeds "funding police memorials, support for the families of officers killed or severely injured in the line of duty, and protective vest replacements for officers, according to The Southern Illinoisan.

"Our police officers stand in the face of danger every day to keep us safe," Rauner said in a written statement. "We are proud to stand with them and support their families when they are faced with a devastating loss. This new ticket will help fund scholarships for their children and honor their bravery at memorial parks across the state."

House Republican Leader Jim Durkin — who had pushed hard for passage of the legislation — said in the news release, "Our police officers wake up every day and put their lives on the line to ensure the safety and security of their citizens and communities. It is our duty to help them and their families when they are catastrophically hurt protecting Illinoisans, and this legislation ensures more money will be available without relying on additional state funding."

Moneys received from the scratch-off game shall be divided equally for distribution into the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Fund, the Police Memorial Committee Fund, and the Illinois State Police Memorial Fund, the bill states.

The funds will be used to build and maintain police memorials and parks, hold annual memorial commemorations, give scholarships to children of officers killed or severely injured in the line of duty, provide financial assistance to police officers and their families when a police officer is killed or injured in the line of duty, and provide financial assistance to officers to purchase or replace protective equipment.

The Columbus (IN) Police Department released its answer to the viral "lip-sync challenge" on Facebook, and it included an appearance by one of that city's most famous native sons — NASCAR driver Tony Stewart.

In the opening segment of the video, officers pretend to pursue at high speed and then pull over Stewart on a desolate rural road.

"Smoke" exists the vehicle, raises his arms, facing away from the officers. He and three female officers then lip sync the refrain "turn around, bright eyes" from the song 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' by Bonnie Tyler.

The video also includes segments of songs by Journey, Miley Cyrus, and even the theme song from the TV show "Friends."

Maine Police Apologize for "Arresting" Marilyn Manson

A "Gif video" of rock performer Marilyn Manson being placed in handcuffs by a Bangor (ME) police officer was posted to Instagram and instantly went viral, receiving more than 415,000 views.

The trouble is, the whole thing was a prank, perpetrated by Manson and Officer Curtis Grenier, who was posted to security backstage at the Impact Music Festival on Saturday.

A public information officer took to Facebook to head off any public backlash, writing, "In the interest of saving us a whole lot of call-backs, Marilyn Manson was merely handcuffed and released immediately thereafter."

The post poked a little good-natured fun in Officer Grenier's direction.

"Officer Curtis Grenier, typically listening to only Enya, and a little bit of Oasis, was posted backstage during the Impact Music Festival. He did not recognize Mr. Manson without his stage makeup- our apologies."

The post went on to explain that "Grenier has been spoken to and relieved of back-stage concert related duties for the foreseeable future. The Chief has determined that Grenier can work backstage during Lord of the Dance or anything related to Disney."

Fawn Rescued from Wildfire "Kisses" California Officer Who Saved It

The California Highway Patrol in Redding posted to its Facebook page a message showing images of CHP San Francisco Sergeant Fawson receiving a wet kiss from the one-month old fawn he rescued from a wildfire that is raging across approximately 30,000 acres and has caused the evacuation of more than 10,000 residents.

Cal Fire found the animal without a mother, and Sergeant Fawson evacuated the deer to safety.

"The deer was released to, and will be cared for by a wildlife rescue. The fawn even thanked Sgt Fawson with a kiss," CHP said in the Facebook post.

Illinois Teens Connect With Law Enforcement in Education Program

The Kane County (IL) Sheriff's Office says that 85 students who enrolled in a six-week program which includes a K-9 demonstration and a chance to check out SWAT armored vehicles have graduated.

The program also addresses career advancement, race and gender relations, as well as being mindful when posting on social media.

"Each of the Junior Deputies are instructed and mentored by Kane County Sheriff's Deputies, as well as justice system professionals," says the KCSO website. "During the course of the summer program, Junior Deputies develop skills in team leadership, interact one-on-one with law enforcement officers, and are exposed to a rewarding career in the military or law enforcement."

Kane County Sheriff Don Kramer launched the Junior Deputy Program three years ago.

Los Angeles County Sheriff Launches Inquiry into Deputy Tattoos

Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell recently announced "the launch of a comprehensive study into tattoos and their relation to deputy subgroups in the law enforcement department," according to Epoch Times.

"No one has undertaken a serious, comprehensive study of the issue. I intend, on my watch, to get to the bottom of it,” McDonnell reportedly said.

The Sheriff said the department will be partnering with the county counsel and inspector general for the study, said the Epoch Times.

Recycling Industry Trade Group Touts Scrap Theft Partnership with Police

The recycling industry's 10-year-old online scrap metal theft reporting system — which enables law enforcement to broadcast alerts to local scrap facilities to be on the lookout for stolen scrap material such as copper wire and other valuable metals — has reached the milestone of more than 10,000 registered law enforcement users, according to a press release issued by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries.

The online service — dubbed ScrapTheftAlert — enables users to upload detailed descriptions and photos so that nearby recycling facilities can be on the lookout for stolen materials.

"The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries through strong relationships with law enforcement has increased the availability of ScrapTheftAlert.com and is making a difference in the fight against metals theft,” said Brady Mills — director of law enforcement outreach for the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) — in a written statement.

According to Department of Energy estimates, metal theft costs — including lost revenue and damages related to the thefts — total $1 billion each year, and repairs often cost much more money than the value of the stolen property.

Overall there more than 24,000 total registered users including private security, companies, and individual users in addition to law enforcement, according to ISRI. The organization says that as a result of the system, some $2,744,679 worth of property has been recovered.

Missouri Officer Suspended for "Distracted Driving" Crash with Bicyclist

VIDEO: Missouri Officer "Distracted Driving" Collides with Stationary Bicyclist

A police officer with the Peculiar (MO) Police Department has been suspended after a "distracted driving" collision with a stationary bicyclist, according to KMBC-TV.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol crash report, Officer Charles Wallace was behind the wheel of a 2014 Ford Explorer patrol vehicle when he made a left-hand turn, cut the corner too sharply and struck the bicyclist, who was wearing a helmet camera that captured the entire event on video.

Officer Wallace can be heard on the video saying, "That was my bad."

Wallace has been suspended with pay until an investigation is completed.
