Clipper Race Training | Knots, running backstays and winch work

In order to support and complement the Clipper Race training programme Ben Bowley, Clipper Race Head of Training and Chief Instructor, demonstrates via a set of videos a few key areas that crew often ask about. These videos include how to tie some of the regularly used and most useful knots; bowline, rolling hitch and tugman̢۪s hitch. He then demonstrates how to use the running backstays, one of the areas which can confuse new crew the most. Fundamental to sailing, and the race is safe winch handling, here Ben covers how to correctly dress and load a winch and then the two methods of unloading. The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is taken on by people from all walks of life and from all over the world; no experience is required. No matter what their previous sailing experience is, whether they have never stepped on a yacht before, or have sailed all their lives, all crew must complete and pass the extensive Clipper Race training programme which spans four levels. The goal is to give crew the training and tools they need in order to become safe and efficient ocean racing crew, preparing them for one of the toughest endurance challenges on the planet. The Clipper Race Training team, of Training Skippers and Training Mates, use all their years of experience to cater to and coach all different types of learners, whether they are visual, auditory, or kinesthetic learners. Each of the trainers will adapt to the needs of the crew to best support their learning. The training programme itself is as practical as it gets with all crew getting involved in each of the evolutions, roles and positions which exist on board and regularly reflect and review progress. A Crew Manual, Crew Hub, recommended reading list, and wet notes are provided beforehand to support the programme.
